Custom-made dentures are often a great choice if you need to replace most or all of your teeth, and they come in a variety of forms. Dentures can both restore the appearance of your smile and allow you to eat and speak with ease again. General dentist Dr. Nick Dovey offers removable and implant-supported dentures for residents in San Diego, CA. Removable dentures are held in place with a paste or glue and are removed for cleaning while implant-supported dentures are secured to the gums and jawbone with implants. At Finest City Dental, we can help you determine whether removable or implant-supported dentures are right for you. From there, our office will have your dentures made custom to look beautiful and natural. Schedule an appointment with Dr. Dovey to get more information about removable and implant-supported dentures.
TYPES OF DENTURES
The types of dentures we offer at Finest City Dental are:
- Removable: Traditional removable dentures are held in place with glue and can be removed for cleaning and soaking. These dentures can be full or partial.
- All-on-4: All-on-4 implant dentures are dentures secured in place with the four posts implanted into the upper and lower arch.
- Implant-supported dentures: Implant-supported dentures, like the All-on-4, are secured to the jawbone with dental implants. They do not have to be removed for cleaning.
All of these options have their advantages and noteworthy aspects so you should talk to Dr. Dovey about which denture type best suits your preferences and overall condition.
You may be interested in removable or implanted dentures if you need dentures to replace most of your teeth. If you still have natural teeth, they can either be removed or used as support for a partial denture piece. Either way, both removable and implant-supported dentures require patients to have a healthy jawbone and gums. During your appointment with Dr. Dovey, he will assess your condition and give you your choices to fit your needs and goals. If implant-supported dentures are chosen, a bone and/or gum grafting surgery may be performed to strengthen specific areas before the posts can be implanted.
What To Expect
For removable dentures, Dr. Dovey may perform an extraction on any natural teeth before impressions are taken, which will help craft your custom dentures. Partial removable dentures will be tinted to blend with your remaining teeth for an attractive result. As soon as your full or partial dentures are finished, Dr. Dovey will adjust them to be comfortable. He will also discuss methods to clean and care for your custom dentures. This process is much less lengthy than if you were to receive implant-supported dentures. Removable dentures also require additional maintenance, such as soaking and the use of adhesives.
If implant-supported dentures were selected during your consultation, Dr. Dovey will need to make sure your mouth is healthy enough to support the metal posts. To determine this, he will complete a thorough dental exam using digital imaging to assess the health of your jawbone and gums. If your gums or jawbone are not strong enough to accept the implanted posts, gum and/or bone graft surgery may be done. As soon as the grafted area is strengthened, you can have implant surgery. For your procedure, local anesthesia will be administered to numb your mouth. He will then make surgical incisions into your gums and place the implants in the jawbone. For dentures, four or more posts will be needed for each arch. The gums will be stitched with the upper portion of the implanted post remaining above the gums. The implants will be protected by a temporary denture as your mouth heals in 4 – 6 months. Over time, the implants will integrate with your jawbone and gums. As soon as the dental implants are fully healed, your custom-made dentures can be connected to the implanted posts and fitted.
It will probably take time before your dentures feel comfortable, but over time, it will become more and more natural to speak and eat normally. If you have removable dentures and they begin to feel loose, come back to Finest City Dental to get them adjusted. Both removable and implant-supported dentures should be cared for, like natural teeth, with daily flossing and brushing. Whenever you take out your removable dentures, they need to be soaked to avoid them drying out. You should continue to attend annual exams and bi-annual cleanings at Finest City Dental so Dr. Dovey can monitor the fit and/or wear of your custom dentures and the overall health of your mouth. He will let you know when your dentures should be replaced or repaired. With good treatment, your custom dentures can last for a long time.
If you are using insurance, some of the expenses of your custom dentures will probably be paid for. A member of our team will talk to your dental insurance company to figure out your coverage and personal responsibilities. In your first appointment with Dr. Dovey, he will personalize your treatment so your dentures (removable or implant-supported) match your budget and needs. Finest City Dental accepts several payment methods, including low-interest medical financing.
